Pack the Room for Worker's Rights
Location: The Wilson Building, 1350 Pennsylvania Ave NW
Event Details: This Monday morning at 9:30am, we need EJC volunteers and supporters to pack the DC Council chamber to show that DC needs to do more for workers who are denied their rightful wages. Can you join us? RSVP by replying to this email.
Workers will be testifying for the first time about their experience with wage theft. We need to show the DC Council that the whole community supports fixing this wide-spread problem. Solange will tell about how her employer kept providing one bad excuse after another for not paying her and how she had to drop out of school because she didn't have money for tuition. She'll explain that even though the employer was eventually convinced to pay, the Office of Wage Hour didn't assess any penalty, interest, or damages beyond the money they owed her in the first place, so she worries that wage theft will keep happening. She needs our support.
On Monday, we will gather in the main lobby of the Wilson Building first to thank Councilmember Marion Barry for his leadership in supporting DC workers and present him with a giant paper bill for the outstanding balance of wages workers were not paid for their hard work, so he knows how much money we need his help to collect. Then we will pack the room at the oversight hearing for the Department of Employment Services to tell the DC Council that we are demanding an end to wage theft in our city. Bring a photo ID to get into the bulding.
